Westby United Methodist Church

Love God by loving others. Serve God by serving others.

Being God’s helping hands

Benefits of Serving

Serving others can benefit both the people being helped and the person doing the serving.
Some common benefits include:
• Stronger relationships: Helping others often builds trust, goodwill, and deeper connections with family, friends, coworkers, and communities.
• Greater sense of purpose: Many people find meaning in contributing to something larger than themselves. Acts of service can make daily life feel more significant.
• Personal growth: Serving others can develop qualities such as patience, empathy, humility, leadership, communication, and problem-solving.
• Improved well-being: Research in psychology suggests that volunteering and helping others are often associated with higher life satisfaction, positive emotions, and lower feelings of isolation.
• Broader perspective: Engaging with the needs and experiences of others can challenge assumptions and increase understanding of different situations and viewpoints.
• Stronger communities: When people support one another, communities tend to become more resilient, cooperative, and capable of addressing shared challenges.
• Reciprocity and trust: Acts of service can encourage a culture where people are more willing to help each other in return, creating networks of mutual support.
Different traditions explain the value of service in different ways. Some religious perspectives view service as a duty to God or humanity, while secular perspectives often emphasize compassion, social responsibility, and human flourishing. Despite these differences, many traditions agree that serving others can enrich both the giver and the receiver.
A useful distinction is that service doesn’t always mean large sacrifices. Small actions—listening attentively, mentoring someone, helping a neighbor, or contributing your skills—can have meaningful effects on both others and yourself.

Accessible parking spaces are available in the smaller west-side lot, which is adjacent to the church’s handicap-accessible side entrance.
The church’s main entrance is located on the south side of the building along East State Street.
Our fellowship hall is located on the north side of the church and can be reached from either the main entrance or the side entrance. After entering the building, proceed past the sanctuary and continue down the hallway to reach the restrooms and fellowship hall.

Yes, we have a fellowship time after our worship service, beginning around 10:00 AM. Join us in the Fellowship Hall for snacks, beverages, and an opportunity to connect with others. We encourage you to stay, enjoy some refreshments, and spend time visiting with fellow worshippers.

Westby UMC offers a Youth Sunday School program for children ages 3 and up. Classes meet on Sunday mornings from mid-September through mid-May, beginning at 10:15 a.m.
Our program is currently structured like a one-room schoolhouse, where children of different ages learn and grow together. Through engaging activities and hands-on projects, our Sunday School teacher helps children discover God’s love and learn what it means to follow Him.
Activities include:
• Bible Lessons and Scripture Exploration – Learning key Bible truths through Bible points, object lessons, and Scripture.
• Serving Others – Participating in outreach projects that support nursing homes, our local community, and Operation Christmas Child.
• Games and Crafts – Reinforcing lessons through creative and interactive activities.
• Music, Children’s Worship, and Prayer – Growing in faith through worship, singing, and prayer.
We strive to create a fun, welcoming environment where children can build friendships, strengthen their faith, and experience God’s love in meaningful ways.

At Westby United Methodist Church, Holy Communion is celebrated monthly, usually on the first Sunday of the month, and on special days throughout the year. The Communion table is open to everyone, and all are welcome to participate.
